SPEARHEAD announce CALM as Charity Partner for 2022

In Mental Health Awareness Week, Spearhead is incredibly proud to announce Campaign Against Living Miserable (CALM) as our charity partner for 2022.

CALM is a suicide prevention charity that offers a wide range of services to help people when they are in a bad place. Their aim is to save lives and change society so that people feel empowered to share their experiences and get the help they need before they reach the point of crisis.

We want to encourage people in our community to feel that they can reach out to CALM for support. They may be struggling, in crisis, or recently bereaved.

Over the coming months SPEARHEAD will be working with CALM to highlight the issue, and dangers, of poor mental health in the farming community and to raise awareness of the help that is available to people.

Empowering our friends and colleagues…

The aim of the partnership is to empower our colleagues and friends in the Farming Community to recognise the issues and seek help, or speak to people who they believe may need that help.

 Suicide is one of the biggest killers in the farming community, with statistics, sadly showing that on average one farmer a week will take their own life in the UK.

WE WANT TO CUT IT.

Farming and agriculture is an incredibly rewarding and honourable profession but it’s also one that has many recognised pressures:

✅ Emotional Pressure

✅ Financial Pressure

✅ Male Dominance (men are statistically less likely to open up about mental health issues)

✅ Social Isolation

Figures, published by the Office of National Statistics reveal the scale of the mental health issues facing UK agriculture show 133 people in UK farming and the associated agricultural trades took their own lives in 2019-20.

An FSF survey published also found 88% of farmers under 40, rank poor mental health as the biggest hidden problem facing the industry, the coronavirus pandemic will have also increased the mental health issues for farmers and could continue long after the virus has gone.

Working to change attitudes, and lives.

CALM has not traditionally been involved with agricultural suicide prevention – SPEARHEAD is proud to be working with them to change that. 

Our aim is that, together with CALM, we can ensure people are aware of them and that they feel empowered to reach out to them. CALM is there to listen and help – without judgment.
